Note: "Overall" scores are not an average of the individual scores
for a game, but just my overall impression of the game as a whole.
Don't think on it too much.

I'm currently on a mission as a practically-lifelong Final Fantasy fan to... actually play all of the games.Keep in mind I'm doing this purely out of love for the series (and as my own sort of journaling project). No offence meant toward the games I didn't like or their fans! Also: I've been using em-dashes in my writing for years, and I'm not going to stop now. Don't you dare accuse me of using some shitty AI program for this.Games with clickable names will bring you to a much more indepth review.Let's mosey. šŸ˜Ž

Final Fantasy XII

Last completed: April 2026
Beautiful gameplay and great characters, I just wish I could follow and connect with the plot more. Overall, this was one of the most ā€œfunā€ Final Fantasy games I’ve played, but I’m not sure if the plot will really stick with me in the long run.

Plot

This is where FFXII suffered the most for me: the plot was a bit hard to follow in parts, especially with its constant use of a sort of ā€œOlde Englishā€-type dialogue. The minute-to-minute plot was fine, but I would often miss things and had to catch up by reading the Wikipedia summary before I finished it so the ending would sink in properly. I also personally struggle to connect with and fully process plots that revolve around war and governments too much so I think I also lost a bit there. Several important characters showing up repeatedly in full suits of armor, helmet and all, didn’t help either, since I mixed them up constantly without a face to connect to.From what I did get from it, the plot was decent enough, and I do like the worldbuilding of Ivalice. I haven’t played Tactics yet as of writing this, so I’m not already connected to the world itself, but I can see why the series has returned here several times over.

Gameplay

The gameplay was what made me fall in love with this game! Hilariously, as someone who absolutely despised FFVIII’s Junction system (since I know they’re often compared to one another), FFXII’s gambits and license boards were a knock out of the park for me.I played the Zodiac Age version of the game in specific, so I also loved the job system, especially being able to mix and match two jobs per character. I feel like not a lot of people probably came up with the job combinations I did — I really don’t remember why Basch was primarily a healer, but it worked for me — but the ability to do just that led to a lot of fun experimenting with the combinations and party setups. The gambit system was one of my favorites, being able to slowly optimize everyone and not have to manually select every single option in a fight, which tends to drag on after several hundred fights in a single game. Not needing to manually select every move for every grinding battle with low-leveled monsters I walk by saved a lot of hassle, while harder fights still needed me to actually step in and take care of things myself (while several characters still took care of themselves). It was a great balance of strategy needed without making every battle drag on forever when I was almost guaranteed to win anyway. This is one of the few games where I actually had a lot of fun grinding for levels, and honestly I think I probably ended the game pretty far overleveled anyway, especially since I did a lot of the optional sidequests and hunts. I just didn’t want to leave this game behind!

Characters

The characters in FFXII are hard to summarize for me. I love a lot of them at their core; I love their designs and the bits of their personalities I got (of course Balthier is a standout, as he seems to be for just about everyone), but since I struggled to follow some of the plot, of course some of the characters’ full scope was lost on me too.I loved what I did catch, but I think the use of the Olde English (or whatever you want to call it, this type of overly archaic language) meant some was still lost on me. I know this isn’t a barrier for everyone, but I often struggle with processing language like this, so I definitely missed more than I would have liked, both in the plot and in character development. The overall design and setup of the characters was great though; but with one critique: did the entire party really have to all be blonde? 🤨

Style

The aesthetics and worldbuilding of this game were fantastic! I loved the design of each region, even the ones later in the game that you pretty much just run through and really need to return to, like the Mosphoran Highwaste. I’m also a huge sucker for floating cities and old temples; and the design of Rabanastre, though confusing to navigate at first, really ended up feeling like a ā€˜home’ city by the end of the game. While there weren’t many ā€œminigamesā€ in this game, the few truly unique sidequests really had a lot going for them, like wandering all around Archades for sandalwood chops. They broke up the pacing in fun ways, but not for long enough that they ever felt like too much of a pain.
